The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office has formed a new elite crime fighting unit within the department. They call it the Drug Interdiction and Criminal Enforcement Unit (D.I.C.E.). and they posted a story on the sheriff’s office’s website last week that describes the unit this way: “A specialized team dedicated to proactive enforcement aimed at stopping criminal activity in transit along Coffee County’s key transportation routes. Working hand-in-hand with the DCDU and the Criminal Investigative Unit, the D.I.C.E. Unit focuses on identifying and intercepting criminal operations before they reach local neighborhoods. Each agent has received specialized training to better detect and disrupt street-level crime in areas known for criminal activity.”
To lead this exclusive collection of officers and agents, the department has also hired a new commander. A.D. Clay, a detective from Los Angeles, California, will take over the unit on January 1, 2026. Detective Clay is most famous for solving the killings of The Black Plague lead singer Bobby Black and shock jock Johnny Crunch, both of whom were killed by record company executive Julian Grendel. The two men were killed to cover up Grendel’s illegal activities, which included bootlegging music from his record company.
Following the Grendel case, Detective Clay enjoyed a few years of notoriety then disappeared from public view. He has since resurfaced in an attempt to jumpstart his law enforcement career. In spite of being a foul-mouthed chain-smoking old-school detective, Clay believes that his big city skills will translate well into a small community like Coffee County. “I was once the hippest detective in the country. I’m still the best. I’ve had a lot of conversations with Sheriff Cole and the rest of the officers. I’ve spent some time in Douglas over the last few weeks and I feel like I’ve got a good understanding of the community. It doesn’t matter where you are – criminals are criminals. They do the same things with the same motivations. I’ve been in the spotlight my whole life. I don’t really care what people think about what I do as a police officer. We are going to turn this community around,” he said in a prepared statement.
Earlier in his career, one of Clay’s calling cards was using nursery rhymes to describe his cases. He said he has a special nursery rhyme for Coffee County:
Hickory dickory dock
The dealers were working The Block
Their cover they blew
When we busted their crew
Now in jail they’ll get to rot
“Remember the three blind mice – see how they run? I never understood where they were going. Same thing with thieves and drug dealers. I’ll have them running around like those stupid blind mice,” he said.
